3 Remarkable Local 'Gurus'
of the Ageless Wisdom

By Frater W

Vic, "light"

Mike, "love"

Bea, "will"

After almost a year from AWL’s re-opening (in 2005, and more than 10 yrs after it was established) , we have met different types of people who dropped by at the library searching for a guru personality or a ‘master’. Upon being informed that no such personality exists in the AWL, they go away in disappointment, usually without even finding time to browse at the Teachings contained in the books on the shelves.

Guru-shoppers and old school devotees cannot be blamed solely for this malady. We have witnessed the sprouting of numerous so called new age, occult, or even pagan groups, claiming to be Aquarian age in orientation and promising to empower people to be Self-reliant children of the universe and yet, they themselves encourage the growth and development of this lucrative title or this new caste and boast of having a whole gamut of obsolete self-styled piscean age gurus, masters, sat-gurus, mega-initiates, super-lamas, priestesses, mages, ascended creatures, and a whole lot of novel titles signifying claims to spiritual or super heroes status, which in reality, disempower people from realizing their true nature due to the dependency on authority figures (they promote) for their subjects' salvation, enlightenment, karma, prosperity, or even for thinking.

While not personally seeking for a guru, I am so lucky and thankful to have met 3 remarkable local 'gurus' of the Ageless Wisdom, in the course of my search for my life's meaning and purpose. They are Mr. Vic Hao Chin, Jr., Mang Mike Nator and Bea Ajero and I met them all, as if by some divine edict, in the years 1990-91; and never met one to this date who can even be half as comparable.

No, these 3 guys never claimed to be one (Bea would even jump in terror at the thought that she is being considered a 'guru'!); they did not impose reverence and they did not give me 'shaktipat' or anything miraculous; i didnt meet them in the Himalayas nor in my dreams nor in the astral realms; they are not perfect guys with halos or shining white or golden auras; and they did not promise me some formulas to achieve enlightenment or prosperity; nor do they claimed to have supernormal powers (except for Mang Mike) nor 'channelled' all sorts of Masters,Marvel super heroes or even Winnie the pooh and Scoobydoo! What these 'gurus' taught me are values that are real and timeless, those that will not fade in a lifetime; these are soul qualities and character traits that were lived and observed, but not lectured, that left a deep impact on my consciousness to strive to live the higher life; qualities that inspire me to serve; and strength of character that are worthy of emulation.

I was able to meet Mr. Vic Hao Chin, Jr. of the Theosophical Society (TS), in-depth in circa 1990 when he started re-forming the Theosophical Youth Movement (TYM), though I had been a silent member of TS since 1988. I joined the TYM and has been in close association with some of the activities in the TS office. That was the time I was able to observe the remarkable character of Mr. Hao Chin.

Mr. Hao Chin is a tireless, proactive and passionate worker for Theosophy (another name for the Ageless Wisdom) and the Theosophical cause. Inspite of a hectic work schedule in running his successful business enterprise and having a role of father and head of his family, he can give a lot of time and energy in managing the affairs of the Theosophical Society, without monetary benefits in return; he writes a lot, does lectures and speaking engagements on theosophical subjects, not only locally but globally, he organizes retreats on self-transformation, especially for the youth, sets the direction for TS, initiates new projects for human betterment, such as the values education program for educators, and many more in the area of practical service and livelihood programs for the poor. I often wonder where he gets the energy and the inspiration for all of these. But this passion in working for a self-less cause impacted my consciousness deeply.

My foundation knowledge in the Ageless Wisdom teachings or Theosophy are mostly derived from his introductory course in Theosophy. He is a very effective teacher and speaker as he was able to convey truths in simple yet striking words. For instance in one occassion, I mentioned that I am practising vegetarianism and he asked me my reason. I was doing it then because a certain meditation guru required me to do so to practise his group's spiritual development method. Mr Hao Chin made me realize that for it to last, my motivation for pursuing that diet should not be selfish in purpose, such as meditation or personal spiritual development; it should be done for a cause like becoming a vegetarian to practice non-injury and a genuine concern to stop animal cruelty. His talks on "The examined life" and "Life work" were also life changing. In the final days of the TYM, I remember him advising us to always live for a cause and being too inward looking is bad for the group; instead we should start looking outward and forward - as to what we can contribute to others as a group. I took his advise seriously and it inspired me so much that later on it became our basis (and partly from the Alice Bailey's teachings) for developing a similar introductory seminar, in the hope that it can also inspire other people the same way. He is also a friend and can lend an ear even for personal problems. I remember when there was sickness in our family, he offered medical referrals who can help us go through the difficult process.

It is thrilling to think what other great things Mang Mike Nator could have done for humanity had he not suffered from physical disability due to an ailment that struck years before he came to Manila. But inspite of being immobile, he has done much already. In contrast to the two, Mang Mike Nator exhibited 'paranormal powers' - he's a seer with high clairvoyant abilities, much like that of CW Leadbeater and Geoffrey Hodson of the TS who can see the atoms, cells of the body, soul rays, past lives, and even the devachanic kingdom. Yet, he was (he passed on to the other side 3 years ago) different from the rest of the psychics of today, that he never advertised or brag about his special skills; never charged money for it; and never imposed anyone to bow down on him and call him master or guru; did not foster dependence on him, like promising anyone to ascend them or to do their spiritual work for them (like the personal aspirant's task of aligning one's personlity to his Soul); and he only used his ability to help humanity, such as for teaching, occult research, healing and counselling, and many more - but never to scan or spy on people's private lives and intentions.

What impressed me so much about his life is his humility and compassion. I observed how some inconsiderate people would sometimes visit him very early in the morning requesting for a healing session.  Though he was not feeling well, he would take time to go out of his room and talk to them.  But walking out of his room  to the reception area was not an easy task for him. He was heavy and too much effort is needed; yet he never complained and greeted the visitors with a smile and with joy. Much were written about him in my memoir after his passing to the other side.

Though she does not possess the speaking and literary eloquence of Vic nor the higher psychicism of mang Mike, Bea Ajero is the bravest and the staunchest advocate of the Ageless Wisdom Teachings I've ever met. She has a zeal of a crusader where most folks of her age will just retire peacefully and luxuriously in a beach or mountain resort enjoying the fruits of her younger years. To my mind, if this woman only started out early in the dissemination of the Teachings (she's in her mid-70s now), she could have conquered the world! But accordingly, work and family obligations occupied much of her earlier years.

To understand Bea and appreciate her deep insights, you have to know her for quite some time. I met her in the same period of 1990-91, when I also got to know Vic and mang Mike. I was still a student when suddenly a stranger dropped by at our house looking for me. My relatives thought Im in trouble or has done some mischief because an 'American' (a cia agent, perhaps? lol!) is looking for me. It turned out we belong to the same esoteric group (Arcane School), and she was from Chicago, IL (and of a German-Filipino heritage) looking for a co-worker who might help her in the local work she's planning to start - a library or anything that will disseminate the Ageless Wisdom and also help in the education of the Filipinos. I was not ready then as I doubt if I can really contribute something to the Work she is planning to do. Probably disappointed, she continued on her own and setup up a library or stall in the Antipolo church area offering children's literatures and educational books for free lending. Later on, she transferred to the Wack-Wack area and opened the Ageless Wisdom Library. What is remarkable is she did it all by herself, going around Manila, assembling things, starting all up without any assistance or organization inspite of her age (she's a complete stranger here during those times, Manila, accordingly, was different then when she was here as a young child before the WWII). Only the conviction that what she is doing is for The Plan and the Work of the Great Ones.

In the mid-90s, I met her again with her library already running. There were lots of activities and so much books from all sorts of spiritual traditions. I joined the work for quite some time until she strategically decided to disband the group temporarily to ward-off organizational 'raiders' or chaos bringers who might compromise the mission-vision of the Work. We continued to meet at his residential unit in the 7th floor during full moons and went on with informal study groups, book lending, and group meditation. Eventually, we became co-workers and planned to get organized. Perhaps due to the influx of the Shamballa energy in the year 2000, so much pro-active projects and educational seminars were planned together with Light Net. Much preparation was made and the initial stages were carried out like the yearly exhibits in the Book Fairs in Malls and other Universities. Then there was a short period of confusion when the peaking off of the Work has to stop. And finally, as if by some divine edict, the plan has to continue and the Library was re-opened formally in the year 2005 with renewed vigor and enthusiasm.

Through those years as a co-worker, I could objectively observe that Bea lives a simple life, modest, and would rather utilize excess resources for the Work, than indulge in luxury. She is dedicated and focused to the Ageless Wisdom as presented by Alice A. Bailey, though some misinterpret it for rigidity; I recently realized the wisdom of it all, as I assumed more responsibility for the Work. She has a compassionate and ready to help nature, to the point of naiveness. And most outstanding is her tireless effort to work for the Ageless Wisdom, especially in the area of dissemination. She is a doer, an action woman, more than a talker. She gets impatient with so much adornment, too much planning and chats; she wants the job done, even if it means doing it all alone by herself. Even if the doctors tell her to slowdown, she wont stop. In one occasion while chatting over a cup of coffee in her Baguio residence, I asked her why she keeps on drinking coffee which might be bad for her heart. She replied to me candidly, "What do you want me to do, sleep in the house the whole day like an old folk? With the tons of meds I take...At least the coffee keeps me awake. What is the worth of the remaining years of my life, If I can no longer contribute to the cause of the Ageless Wisdom". I was stunned. I went out for a while and tears of joy flowed out. I prayed I will have the same fiery will when I reach old age :)

But wait, these 'gurus' I am referring to are in no way perfect. Indeed, they are humans too and have personality weaknesses. But in this era of fantastic claims, distortions, delusions and glamours on guruship, it is refreshing to ponder on the lives of people who silently lived the life of a genuine guru, a teacher or a disciple of the Ageless Wisdom, who can have a transformative impact on the lives of others who come into contact with them.
